912 & 912E Differences Between Years - "Which Year is Best?"

Over the six years of manufacture, the factory was constantly updating the 912.  Owners could also create a unique 912 by specifying numerous options offered.  Following are numerous changes in the evolution of the 912/912E (click for a table of original specifications or a list of 912 books).  Features should be considered individually; an original car may not have all the features listed in a yearly group.

'67-'69 Emblem1967

Registry Member Chris Starleaf's '67 912 Soft-Window Targa in Illinois, USARevised motor mounts dampened the engine for reduced bodywork vibration and lower noise levels.  Revised half-shafts with Lobro constant velocity joints, louder horn, new door locks, new Porsche logo, type identification located directly below ventilator grill.  Five gauge instrument cluster standard, round shift knob with shift pattern, Perlon carpets, carpeted tunnel cover, new handles on ash trays and glove compartment, black/white sun visors on coupes, indicator button.  Optional Fuchs 4 1/2" x 15" alloy "windmill" wheels, rubber strips for chrome bumper guards. 

First model year the Targa model became available, equipped with soft-window and stainless steel Targa bar standard.  912 Targa police cars were constructed, but are extremely rare.

1967 is a cutoff for some historical racing organizations , making 1967 a popular 912 racecar year.
