Porsche® 912 & 912E Original Paint Codes and Numbers

Exterior Paint Table

Use the following list to help determine the VIN plateoriginal exterior color of your car.  You may be in for a surprise and have a rare car!  Look on the paint plate on the left-hand door hinge post, below the chassis number.  If the plate is missing or illegible, you may be able to obtain the paint code info through Porsche Cars North America's Certificate of Authenticity Program. Click for more info>

Note:   For '67-'69 and '76 cars, additional prefix and suffix designations may be attached to the paint colors listed in the table below.  For example, a prefix number 97- signifies that the original paint was 140 degree C / 284 degree F 'baking paint', oven cured with all heat sensitive parts removed.

Original paint manufacturers are designated by suffix letters:

L=Lesonal
G=Glasurit  (See also Glasurit Classic Car Colors and  BASF-Glasurit)
H=Herberts (Now DuPont Herberts)

For 1976 912Es, the paint number should be on the top of the plate, in a three digit (color code) - one digit (coachbuilder) - one digit (paint manufacturer) format.

Original sticker for David Mauk's special order Canary Yellow '69 912 CoupeHow much did special order colors add to the purchase price in 1969?  Registry Member David Mauk's father-in-law was the original owner of his '69 rare Canary Yellow 912 Coupe, and he special ordered it from Germany; click on the window sticker image to the right to find the answer.

Some of the paint colors listed below are linked to a color chip scanned from an original color chart; click on the links to view the chip image.  Photos of 912s painted the original colors are shown for a general rendering only.  You may be able to find the original paint in your car by looking in the trunk, engine compartment, under the upholstery, dashboard, the frame crossmember behind the rear license plate sheetmetal, or other location.  Look for original color charts for all years at literature and swap meets.

Have you restored your 912 with the original color and have a photo to send?  There's still a ways to go finding and displaying all the special color cars '65-'76. If you have a 912 with a rare original exterior color that is not yet pictured, please email a photo for posting on the website!

Thanks to David Pateman for contributions to the information on this page.
